Lions U18 Impressive Away Win over Lakers in Cork League

U18 Cork League: Limerick Lakers 34    Limerick Lions 61   (02/11/2013)

Another great win by Lions U18 today away to Lakers in the Cork League by an impressive 61 to 34. The first half was pretty tight with the Lions up by just 5 at the half. However solid defence and clinical offence saw the Lions boys pull away in the second half to win very comfortably in the end. Luke Ryan ran the offence brilliantly from the point and contributed well also on the score-board. Diarmuid O'Shea was excellent in both defence and offence with Shane MacNamara, David O'Connell and Joe Dudley also making vital contributions and Corey Flynn was dynamic as ever. Aaron Madden came off the bench to grab a few lovely buckets with Matthew Sutton also contributing well late on.

Well done to coaches Seamus O'Connell and Vinny Marrinan also on a great performance and the many hours of hard work done with this squad seems to be bearing fruit. Hopefully this good form can be brought into the National Cup in Dublin next weekend.

Top scorers: Diarmuid O'Shea 18, Luke Ryan 10, David O'Connell 8.

Lions squad: Diarmuid O'Shea, Luke Ryan, David O'Connell, Shane McNamara, Joe Dudley, Corey Flynn, Aaron Madden, Matthew Sutton, Kwaku Appiah.

Lions U18 Progress in National Cup

Saturday October 12th, 2013.

U18 National Cup qualifier St Pauls Killarney 36  Lions 71

Lions U18 had a great win in Killarney an U18 National Cup qualifier. The Lions guided by head-coach Seamus O' Connell and assistant-coach Vinny Marrinan were far too strong for St Paul's, winning by 71 to 36.

This was a great squad performance with every single squad member contributing on the score-board. Luke Ryan ran the offence well from point while international forward Diarmuid O'Shea was impressive as ever with David O'Connell not far behind. Joe Dudley had one of his best ever games in a Lions shirt while Shane McNamara hustled brilliantly on defence while chipping in with good scores. Aaron Madden had a big impact off the bench while Corey Flynn and Matthew Sutton also made good contributions.

Top scrorers - Diarmuid O'Shea 24, David O'Connell 18, Aaron Madden 10, Joe Dudley 8.

Lions go forward now to National cup tournament in Dublin on November 9th and 10th.

Lions U18's impress in Michael Heffernan tournament

Lions U18 squad performed well in the Micheal Heffernan tournament in Neptune Stadium last Saturday.

The Lions pushed a fancied St Vincents (Dublin) side all the way in the first game and then beat Killorglin of Kerry on the buzzer with an alley-oop from Diarmuid O'Shea.

So it came down to a decider for pool second-place and quarter final qualification v Galway Titans. Despite losing star-player Diarmuid O'Shea in the first quarter with an unfortunate injury, Lions battled on bravely and had a shot to win it at the end which just rimmed out. Titans subsequently got through to the semi-final so it was certainly a case of what might have been but for bad luck and injury.

David O'Connell and Diarmuid O'Shea were outstanding throughout for Lions and there were fine performances also from Corey Flynn and young Matthew Sutton who shows great potential.

Coaches Seamus O'Connell and Vinny Marrinan were happy enough with the teams performance though plenty of improvement is required for the Cork League and National Cup so some hard work in store for these boys in coming weeks.

Lions U18 squad for last Saturday's Michael Heffernan tournament as follows:
Diarmuid O'Shea, David O'Connell, Luke Ryan, Shane McNamara, Corey Flynn, Joe Dudley, Adam Barry, Matthew Sutton.

Lions U16's impress in AICC tournament

Limerick Lions U-16's put in an excellent performance at the All-Ireland club championships last weekend in Galway. After going down to Maree of Galway in the first game, the Lions boys put in three top class performances against Waterford Vikings, St Brendan's of Tralee and Belfast Star. The Waterford and Belfast games were two of the best performances all season. The Lions boys brushed aside a decent Waterford team by 16 points and beat a very highly rated Belfast side in a third-place play-off, which was particularly impressive. Coach Diarmuid O'Donovan and all players can be very proud of their efforts over the weekend tournament. The Lions squad was as follows: Matthew Sutton (captain), Adam Barry, Ian Coates, Aaron Madden, Cian Collins, Greg O'Callaghan, Hubert Wierzba, Brian Murray, Shane Moore.
