It was another busy weekend for the underage teams of Limerick Lions basketball club.
On Saturday morning our U9's made the trip to Cork to play in the U9 blitz.
Coach Harry Coyne and the travelling support were more than rewarded for the journey when our youngest players put on a sterling display against Ballincollig, Neptune, St. Anthony's and UCC Demons.
Our U11's were in Cork later in the day to play St. Anthony's where they were unlucky to go down by 2 late points.

Sunday was a memorable occasion for our underage club as we welcomed Limerick Lakers for the first time. Competing in the North Munster Leagues U10, U12 and U14, a great day of Limerick underage basketball was promised and it didn’t disappoint.

Starting the day the Lions U10’s put on a strong performance to edge passed a very good Lakers team.
Lions: Mark Shiels, Matthew Sutton, David Wallace, Colin Koyce, Cian Collins, Connor Cullen, Stephen Clancy, Connor Gliffe, Ruari Madden, Ian Coates.
Lakers: Cian Larkin, Barry Richardson, Stephen O’Shea, Tiernan Lavin Bourke, Stefan Bolger, Darragh Reale.

Next up were the U14’s and a very fast paced game. Lakers started strong and took the Lions by surprise going in at the half with a substantial lead. The Lions coached by Stephen King assisted by Theo Powell, fought back with spirit in the third quarter but the Lakers experience at this age group stood to them in the final quarter as they made good use of possession to the end and were rewarded for taking their lay-ups when the final whistle blew.
Lions 12. Lakers 25.

The U12 game was a closer affair, which gave us some spectacular passes, lay-ups and rebounds from both sides. Lakers were coached by Bono Kavanagh. Lions coached by Ger Myles were stronger for the first half and done enough in the second half to fend off Lakers fight back lead by Alan Crean, who’s 3-pointer and 2-pointer in the final minutes brought his tally to 15.
Lions 35. Lakers 29.

The Lions will be away to Lakers in two weeks time for the return leg of each of these age groups, and then we go on to meet New Inn while also keeping a keen eye on the Ennistymon and Lakers results.
