U14's win All-Ireland U14 Basketball Title

Last Sunday was a very proud day for Limerick Lions basketball club as our under-14 team coached by Harry Coyne and Mark Sutton won a first All-Ireland title for the club.

The All-Ireland tournament took place last week-end in Neptune Stadium Cork with regional league winners from all over the country coming together to battle it out for national titles. After the pool stages on Saturday morning Lions ended up in the division-3 competition. In a keenly contested semi-final on Saturday evening Lions came out on top against Castlecomer of Kilkenny in a game in which they were down by 11 points after the first quarter. However the Lions boys came storming back to lead at the half and pushed on to win by 48 to 38. Team-captain Luke Ryan had the game of his life in this one, scorching the Kilkenny boys for 33 points.

The Lions boys then travelled down to Cork on Sunday for a much-anticipated final against Dunshaughlin of Meath who looked impressive in their semi-final win against Portarlington Kestrels. After another slow start the Lions boys had their noses in front by one at the half. As in the semi-final, the Lions blitzed their opponents in the second half with swift passing, fast breaks and neat lay-ups to beat Dunshaughlin by 46 to 30 and claim an All-Ireland title for the Lions. Shane McNamara had his best game of the year at point-guard while forward Diarmuid O’Shea was also on top-form. Though very closely marked in this game, Luke Ryan came up with the goods as usual to top-score with 16 points. Ian Coates also got some crucial scores and Aaron Madden was a powerhouse under the boards. A key factor in the Lions win was their superior fitness and this was a tribute to coaches Harry Coyne, Mark Sutton and the entire squad. The All-Ireland winning squad was as follows: Luke Ryan (captain), Diarmuid O’Shea, Shane McNamara, Ian Coates, Aaron Madden, Michael Hickey, Cian Collins, Matt Sutton, Eoin Fahey, Conor Cullen, Emmet Gleeson, Sean Moran, Emmet Ryan, Brian Murray and Brian Spillane.
