Limerick Lions U18 Boys Qualify for National Cup Quarter Finals

The Limerick Lions U18 Boys have achieved their goal and secured a place in the quarter finals of the U18 Billy Coffey National Cup, following an impressive weekend of basketball in Portlaoise.

The Lions opened the tournament with three strong wins on Saturday, topping their group and setting up a crucial semi-final clash against St. Mary’s Castleisland on Sunday morning. Both teams knew what was at stake — a place in the National Cup quarter finals — and the game lived up to its billing.

Displaying focus, discipline, and composure, the Lions controlled the tempo from the start. Although St. Mary’s produced several runs to cut into the lead, the Limerick side showed maturity beyond their years, maintaining their advantage and closing out a convincing victory.

That win booked the Lions a quarter-final berth and a spot in the tournament final against hosts Portlaoise Panthers, with the added incentive of securing home-court advantage in the next round. Despite their best efforts, fatigue from a gruelling weekend of basketball took its toll, and Portlaoise emerged as worthy winners.

Nevertheless, the Lions left St. Mary’s Hall with smiles on their faces — mission accomplished. Their performance reflected teamwork, resilience, and a collective hunger that bodes well for the next stage of the National Cup.
